My tribute to The Spokane Police Department

Though this is not the blog I had promised to write, this story had to be told.
**
I got a phone call this morning at about 8:15 from a lady with the Spokane Police Department. It's not every day I get such a call, so I was wide awake. She informed me that Dennis' car had been broken into and that she wanted to know if the van had been broken into as well. I was confused...to say the least....until she explained that his car had been broken into in our garage.
**
Still confused? Yeah, I was, too. While I was talking with her I walked down the stairs and out into the garage to check out the van. Sure enough, the glove compartment was open and all of the little compartments were open. Someone had been in the van. It kind of freaked me out until she explained that they had two men in custody.
**
Turns out that the police caught the men, found a bunch of papers with Dennis' name on them along with the name of his employer and tracked him down. He confirmed that they were his and explained that he had found the garage door open this morning (which is unusual, but not necessarily unheard of) and as he backed out his passenger door opened. (Again, unusual, but Jackson had been talking about how he needed to get some things out of the car...so it was assumed he had left the door open.)
**
So, the bottom line is that we were robbed in our garage last night. The thieves were not interested in our rather expensive mountain bikes, the plethora of tools....or in the fact that the door into the house was unlocked with all sorts of goodies inside. We're not sure how the garage door was opened since I distinctly remember closing it...although not watching to ensure that it had closed completely. We are sure that the thieves rue the day they thought to steal from us since entering our garage bumped their charges up to burglary and they got absolutely NOTHING from us but some paperwork. Couldn't they steal their own job applications??
**
So, this blog is in tribute to the Spokane Police Department who solved a crime, caught the thieves and returned the goods before the unsuspecting homeowners were even aware a crime had occurred. Pretty, cool, huh?? Oh, and my kids thought that the cops that came to our house were SOOO COOOL!! (And I have to admit that they were...they showed me all sorts of tricks to ensure this will NEVER happen again...)

First, they recommend "locking" your garage door openers every night. (Ours can be put in vacation mode.) Second, he said if you have an entry door into the garage to put a rubber door stop there. If there is resistance to a door most thieves will move on. Third, lock you car doors and the door into the house. Fourth, put dowels into the track of your windows. He said a lot more that you can do, but locking the garage door openers was a MUST.

Oh my goodness! How crazy is this? I know when someone once came through our kitchen window (after carefully moving all the plants and knick-knacks off the window ledge), I felt SO VIOLATED!! Kudos to the Spokane Police Department!

That's totally freaky! I have to admit that I'm super careful about my stuff but not the garage. Thanks for sharing the tips as well. I was just about to ask. My suggestion would be to watch your identity for a bit as well. Mine was stolen a few years ago. NOT PRETTY! Glad that the police are so on the ball.

That is really wild. Is it making a case for getting a dog?

Oooh, yeah! Good idea. Please can we get a dog?

By the way, where is the blog you "promised" to write? Or do you just like to keep us in suspense?
